Our Reading Block
This year we will be integrating our Social Studies curriculum with our Language Arts block. We will be having a two hour block of time for our Writing and Reading. The plan will be to read at least one historical fiction, which relates to our Social Studies curriculum as well as one high interest novel. As we read, we will be integrating the nonfiction pieces to teach the background knowledge for our historical fiction novel. The students will be learning techniques and skills to help them understand how to read a nonfiction article. Throughout the units, students will be exposed to writing activities, mini-lessons using several picture books, and collaborating with other fifth graders in the building and other schools! All of this is geared to our Common Core Standards.
What does it look like?
During our ELA block, we will begin with a 30 to 40 minute writing block. Your child will be completing narratives, opinion, and argumentative writing pieces. As your child is thinking about their writing, they will view videos, read nonfiction articles about the topic, and complete mini research projects. Before your child writes, they will have a wealthy background of information on the topic.
After a writing block, we will jump into our Shared Reading for the Day. As a class, we will analyze an article and each day focus on one aspect of the article. At the end of the week, the students will summarize the article.
Next, we will begin our reading block. Since Social Studies will be integrated into our reading, each marking period we will read a historical fiction novel. To begin the year, we will be using two stories from our reading series to learn about narrative elements. We will move into our first novel called The Perilous Road, which relates to the Civil War.
At the end of the reading block, we will discuss what the next day will entail.
